Fashion for Good, an organization dedicated to promoting sustainability in the fashion industry, has announced ambitious projects following the closure of its museum in Amsterdam, aimed at advancing towards a more sustainable and circular textile industry. These initiatives represent a significant step toward a future where fashion is not only aesthetically appealing but also ethical and environmentally responsible.

Innovation in textile recycling : Tracing Textile Waste

One of the key initiatives introduced is Tracing Textile Waste, developed in collaboration with Textile Exchange. This two-year project aims to improve traceability and transparency in the supply chain of recycled textiles. Currently, the lack of standardized data makes it difficult to efficiently track textile waste from its origin to its recycling process. Fashion for Good and Textile Exchange seek to create a standardized framework and an open-source database to facilitate this process. This will not only improve the quality of data collected but also support the evolution of industry standards and certifications.

“Traceability is crucial for expanding the use of recycled textile materials,” said Katrin Ley, Managing Director of Fashion for Good.

“Through this project, we aim to standardize and improve the quality of data collected, thus accelerating the adoption of sustainable practices across the industry.”

Accelerating innovation in sustainable footwear

The second key project focuses on the footwear sector, collaborating with leading brands such as Adidas, Inditex, and Target. With a focus on circularity and sustainability, Fashion for Good is implementing four main workflows across the footwear supply chain. These include the search and validation of sustainable materials, circular design, end-of-use recycling, and establishing traceability protocols to support sustainability claims.

“Each year, millions of shoes are produced globally, many of which end up in landfills,” Ley explained. “Our goal is to transform this situation by promoting innovative solutions that not only reduce waste but also foster circularity and the reuse of materials.”
