Circular fashion: Chanel becomes a partner of the Ellen McArthur Foundation

Chanel has embarked on a new phase of sustainability, marking a significant step forward in its commitment to a circular economy. Since joining the Ellen MacArthur Foundation network last year, Chanel has become a partner. This strategic initiative aligns with the French luxury House’s dedicated journey towards a more sustainable and circular approach within the fashion industry.

Chanel’s Circular Economy Hackathon

The inauguration of this partnership was heralded by an unusual event: Chanel’s Circular Economy Hackathon in Paris. The meeting served as a focal point for over 200 individuals, including Chanel employees, students, manufacturers, suppliers and experts. The objective? Deepen awareness of circular economy principles and explore innovative strategies for Chanel’s transition from a linear to a circular model.

Building on the success of its first Hackathon, which focused on the fight against plastic pollution, this year’s event focused on the broader theme of the circular economy. Held at Chanel’s iconic headquarters on rue Cambon, participants were tasked with developing their own solutions to promote circularity. Their proposals aimed to eliminate waste and pollution, promote the circulation of products and materials, and contribute to the regeneration of nature.

A prestigious jury of leaders from diverse backgrounds, including Foundation CEO Andrew Morlet, Chanel President of Fashion Bruno Pavlovsky, and leading figures from the academic and environmental worlds, evaluated the solutions presented. The selected innovations are scheduled for implementation in Chanel operations over the coming months.

Bruno Pavlovsky, President of Fashion at Chanel, underlined the importance of this initiative, presenting it as an integral part of the house’s ongoing transformation towards a circular fashion and luxury industry. This commitment to evolution reflects Chanel’s long-term determination to reshape industrial practices.

Expressing his enthusiasm for the collaboration, Andrew Morlet, CEO of the Ellen MacArthur Foundation, highlighted the dynamic and innovative approach taken at the Circular Economy Hackathon. He reaffirmed the Foundation’s support for Chanel’s pioneering advances towards a circular fashion industry.
