An innovative dress has just been presented at the Met Gala, one of New York’s most high-profile and exclusive annual fund-raising events for the Costume Institute. Spanish textile company Pyratex distinguished itself at the recent “Sleeping Beauties : Reawakening Fashion” from the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. The collaboration between Pyratex, designer Philip Lim, visionary Charlotte McCurdy and The Slow Factory has resulted in a dress that is not only a work of art, but also a manifesto for sustainability.

Lim’s design, incorporating sequins created from algae and a bamboo and seacell base fabric, proposes a new direction in luxury fashion: it responds to the urgent need for sustainability.

An innovative fabric that promotes biodegradability

Charlotte McCurdy has taken the lead in the use of bioplastics, using macroalgae to develop flakes that capture not only light, but also the essence of environmental responsibility. The collaboration with Pyratex has enabled us to create a base fabric that retains the aesthetic and functional qualities demanded by haute couture, while promoting biodegradability.

The material used, made from bamboo and seacell, represents a step towards eliminating the use of synthetic fibres in garments that have traditionally relied on them. An innovative approach, but above all a necessary one in a world where fashion and ecology must go hand in hand.

With a focus on research and development, Pyratex is not only dedicated to creating new materials, but also to ensuring that its entire supply chain is responsible and transparent. This commitment is evident in every fibre produced, guaranteeing fashion that is not only beautiful but also ethically produced.

Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion” swill be open to the public until next autumn, offering visitors a unique insight into how fashion can play a crucial role in managing climate change and promoting a sustainable future.
